PLANNING TASK 9: Front Cover Mock Ups

These are the front cover templates I have created using photo shop, I had first started creating rectangles and placing them in the position of where a specific item would be placed on the magazine. I had then placed a text box on top of the rectangles and added the words of what is going to be placed there. I then altered the size of the text to match how big the rectangles were and fit it accordingly. I then changed the colours of the rectangles in order to show which sections are same such as the text information rectangles are a darker grey and the title and artist name is black etc.

FIRST TEMPLATE:

This is my first template, I had kept it quite basic as I have placed the title where most titles are placed on magazines Also the bar code has been kept at a usually place, this makes it very clear to the audience as most magazines are structured in the same format.

I wanted to keep the text information in different styles by adjusting the sizes and layout, the longer text box on the right side can have a list of featuring different artist. This will increase the audiences attention as they will know the magazine is not just about that specific artist.

Whereas the smaller boxes can have a one word or sentence making it stand out, such as; a quote by the artist or a small short fact but is very interesting and makes the audience want to read more about it. This can then be put that too find out more, it is on this certain page, making the audience want to literally open the magazine and have a read through.

I wanted to keep the model's image on the center and have the background on the parts where the model's image would not cover so that I do not have a plain background but cover the whole page with the image.

Next to the model, I have kept a text box where the name of the artist will be, this makes it very clear who that artist is. And the position of the box works very well as the model's face will be next to it, this creates a more dramatic effect.

The text will be overlapping the image as the image of the artist will be big, covering the whole page therefore the text is placed at the top, but would have to be of a colour that stands out against the image.

SECOND TEMPLATE:

This is my second template, I have placed the title section at the bottom of the page, most magazines do not have the title placed at the bottom, but I wanted to see how it will work with the rest of the page.

So instead of the title being placed at the top, I have put the name of the artist, whose image will be placed in the center, at the top. This makes it obvious to what the artist's name is and also gives full attention to the model.

The title of the magazine will be the biggest font, and the name of the artist will also be big but a few sizes smaller than the title as the brand of the magazine needs to still have the attention, so that the audience know what the magazine name is and not think the artist name is the title.

I placed the text box in various places, having it slightly more on the left side, due to the bar code being placed on the right. This is so that the text is clear to the audience and does not blend too much with the bar code.

The text box placed under the name of the artist, on the left is slightly longer than the one on the right, this is so that it could be a sentence about the artist or even a quote by them. This creates an even more intense effect of the artist as it makes the cover completely based on that one artist therefore making it seem as if they are a very well known artist.

But to keep the audience attention and not fell like the magazine is all based on that particular artist, the long text box at the bottom left can have a list that features other artists but are the slightly minor ones whereas the celebrity on the cover is the main person the magazine will be about.

The small text box on the top right can have the section of some offer such as the concert tickets or some latest news about the artist that is being shown. This would grow even more interest as having discounted price on tickets etc. is what most people want.

THIRD TEMPLATE:

This is my third template, I have placed the title in a different position to how it usually is on all magazines. Having the title placed on the right with each letter below another, creates a more abstract effect as well as shows the uniqueness of the magazine.

The image of the model will be placed as the whole image on the cover, making it featuring one main artist and allows the audience to know clearly that the magazine will be based on this artist.

Artist's name will be placed above the image or overlapping the artist, as the face of the artist can be either below or above, therefore the name is either placed on the background of the artist of overlapping on the body.

On the top of the page, I have put a section of where text can be placed, this can be a big statement by the artist, or even of this specific brand of the magazine such as other things that are included for example; freebies, quizzes or mentioning of something that the magazine will be having. This would make the audience curious as well as very interested and would like to see inside the magazine.

The other two text boxes are placed at the bottom of the page, one being very big and the other slightly smaller yet closer to the artist. This shows the importance of the different sectioned text information.

The big one can have a quick fact about the artist, or something that is included in this issue, but to continue reading about this, can be found on a specific page. And the other one can be a sentence that links to the artist shown.

The bar code is also placed very differently to the usual layout as it is placed vertically and also at the top left side of the page, this works well was the title is also placed vertically.

FINAL DECISION:

At the end I have decided to go with my first template that I had created, this was because the structure and layout of the cover was very clear and well organised. It looks basic but with the information and images used, I can make the audience want to read further. Having the title and bar code placed where it usually is, makes it a standard magazine and keeps it looking professional as I felt the other two looked slightly childish. The name of the artist being placed beside the artist, is also very modern looking and different as the others have it placed above. Also the different positions and structure of the text boxes are also very abstract due to the sizes, lengths and widths. This gives a clear idea of what kind of information can be placed in the specific sections.
