TASK 3: Music Magazine Analysis Contents Pages

This is a "Spin" music magazine contents page, the title is clearly shown as it is placed on the top, left and is also the biggest font used. Although it is a contents page, there is no heading that shows it is but the layout of the page, clearly shows that it is a contents page. The contents page as a whole is basic but a lot of editing has been put to the page.

Only one image has been used, but is also the background of the page, this gives greatest attention to the image as it is the biggest part of the page, although much colour has not been used, it is still very eye catching. This is due to the artist's image, as she is holding the guitar, but posing in a way that she will "hit" you with it as she is swinging the instrument back.

Also her expression, and hand position gets an immediate attention, as it is the next page and has a sudden change in posture. The artist's make up is simple yet evident that she has got make up on. This is because of the slightly smokey eyes but grey/blue pupils, giving a dramatic look.

The clothing of the artist is simple, a black and beige stripey top, with the blonde hair let down, over the shoulders gives an effortless look and casual look. The colours on the outfit also matches the text and background of the page. This gives greater attention towards the guitar due to it being a different colour.

The logo of the magazine is also presented on the page, this is placed on the top, left side, where usually a title is placed. This is also standing out due to the different colour, of it being a red. The logo is placed beneath the artist's image, creating further importance to the female.

The information is then placed along side the artist on the left, clearly having a title "features", this shows what the magazine includes. It then has the different page numbers with the topic of the information next to it. With an outline of what it is about, under the subheadings.

On the top, right of the page, there is another text, which is a quote of the artist's, this gives a clear indication as it is away from the rest of the text on the page and is also of a different font used. It is a thinner and more rounder style, making it look feminine due to the artist being a female.

At the bottom, left there is also another text box, which is if a different colour background to the rest, it is a dusty blue, which matches the number of the pages. This text is about any other information that maybe important for the audience, therefore placed separate and on the contents page.

The contents page is simple but quite a lot of editing has been done as the image is very high quality, and the flawless look of the female is evident that a lot of work is put into it.

However I think the text on the page could be altered, the font works well with the simple theme but the size should have been slightly bigger as it is not very clear, and more colours should have been used. As only the artist image is the only part of the page, the audience would be looking at.

This is a "Q" music magazine contents page, the logo of the magazine is placed on the top, left keeping it out of the main focus of the page but still clearly represents the brand. The title is then placed next to it in a bold font making it look basic as well as attention grabbing.

A black border is placed below the title, logo and date of the issue at the top, this makes those specific sections on it stand out even more as the text is white with the opposite colour of black emphasising it.

The content of the magazine is placed below the tile, on the left in a listed format. This gives a clear view with the numbers being a different colour and then the subheadings bold, with an outline below it. The subheading "Features", also has a border like the title. But this time red in order to show difference.

Another information section is then placed below the page reference, in order to keep the audience attracted to the magazine. The heading is gold/olive colour keeping it different to the rest of the page, yet making it look sophisticated because of the font style used.

Below that there is another section with a heading "Every Month", which also has the border, matching the "Features", this keeps the theme continuing and professional.

Along the left side of the age, has the main text information, and then a big image is then placed on the right, this gives a well organised format. The image is of a band, who may be featured within the magazine.

The group is all males, keeping their outfits similar, which is a very casual look due to the black jeans and either black, grey or white t-shirts. This matches the rest of the page as it has a colour theme of black, white, grey and red.

The background of the image is simple as well, due to it being of a landscape of a field, with the neutral colours in the background gives a very natural photo, with not very "fame" looking pose or studio etc.

A text box is placed below them on the corner, in a white box, this highlights the information within it. Which also indicates the page number that relates to the band, where information about the group can be found.

At the bottom of the page, has a separate section which shows a quick "review", of the next issue, this keeps the audience who enjoys their magazine, know what the other magazines contains as well.

This has another image, featuring another artist, in order for the audience to be interested as it maybe someone the audience is interested in. And next to it, it also has the contents of what is included within the magazine.

As a whole, the magazine is well structured and works very well in order to keep audience attention due to other information.

This is a "Billboard" music magazine contents page, this is evident because of the logo being placed on the top left side of the page. The logo is very small but still is clear enough to tell which magazine it is.

The title is placed on the middle but slightly to the right, due to another column being placed on the left side of the page, this is showing which songs or albums is at the top of the charts, with it being categorised from top to bottom, indicating their ratings.

The font of the title, is stencil, creating a dramatic and bold look, three images is then placed below this, with a number next to it, indicating where these artists information can be found within the magazine.

This keeps the audience's attention as it is showing different artists information can also be found within the magazine.

Below the images, there is the contents section, which also has information placed below the headings, this is for the audience to have an idea of what it is about and if they would find it interesting or not. Rather than having just the headings, it is not very clear to the audience of what it is about.

Next to the text, there is an image of an artist of a female, the image taken is of a full shot of the person, this shows the importance of the artist. Her pose and expressions seems more appealing to the audience as she is not just stood up but actually is posing in a position showing interest to the audience.

Her clothing is simple, with the black and beige clothing makes it stand out on the white background making a simple outfit look dramatic. Her heels are very "pointy" and high, showing the feminine side and with her hair let down and slight blow maybe using a fan, creates a more effective image.

A number is also placed by her shoe showing where her information can be found within the magazine. below this section of the page there is a blue and black line, indicating the separation between the two sections.

Other information is placed underneath, either quick stories of an artist/band or any other latest news that they felt as valid for the audience to know before even reading the magazine. This further grows audience attention and interest due to the highlighted lime green and blues used to show key words.

Along the side of the page, where it has the ratings of different songs, it has a different colour background, this shows that it is a separate section of the page. It has a grey colour, with a variety of different colours placed in the middle, highlighting the numbers.

This gives a very "pop" look due to the mass colours used on the page, but then making it slightly subtle with the greys and white font used.

The page has a lot going on with a lot of information, but keeping it well organised with the different sections put, highlighting the main areas of where the audience would best be interested in.

This is a "XXL" music magazine contents page, this is clear due to the logo being placed at he bottom, right of the page but due to the red makes it stand out, but not enough to take the attention away from the rest of the page.

The title of the page "doin' lines", is a very large and bold font used, but because of the rounded edges and the letters being lower case, makes the title not look too serious but has a slang word as doing is put as "doin'.

Below the title there is a thick black border going across horizontally across the page. Within this border there is text "B.O.B fills in all the blanks", with two arrows pointing outwards from the text. The colour of these arrows matches the image placed below.

This shows how that specific text above, links to the image and artist shown as the colour is used repeatedly, creating a more professional look.

The contents is then listed along the right side of the page, in a dark colour as the background is white, making it stand out. The numbers of the pages are bold in order to easily see what page that specific information is.

The image is of the artist whose name has already been mentioned, making it clear to the audience who do not know that artist, know what his name is.

The position of the artist is attention grabbing due to him looking directly towards you and knelled down, making a more direct connection. Although his expression is quite serious as he is not smiling, this still works very well with the whole look as it is a hip-hop/r&b genre making them dramatic.

His clothing is very bright as he is wearing an orange jacket with blue trousers, these are the most brightest features on the page, therefore making it stand out and as it contrasts with the rest of the colours used such as the white and black.

The prop used is his shades, which he is not wearing but holding in his hands. This matches his jacket as it is also orange. This gives a colour theme of the black, white and then the orange. Any colours with the white and black being the background and then having a brighter colour makes it evident that a colour theme is going on.

The reason why his shades are in his hands and he is not wearing them, is because he is making eye contact with the audience, therefore by not having them on, makes it seem like he has literally taken it off in order to look at you, creating a very dramatic effect.

At the bottom of the page, there is the date of the issue which is a bigger font size to the contents text of the page. This immediately lets the audience know when or how long this magazine has been. And then next to it on the left there is a much smaller font, maybe saying about some other information or website.

The use of the different sizes for each text section, creates an understanding of which information is more important and needs to be given to the audience whereas the smaller ones are other extra information.

Above that there is a black border, which seems like it is with the image of the artist as it looks like he is literally standing on top of the border. This border matches the one above, below the title, this creates an affect of the section in between the two lines are the key feature of the page.
